Fly fishing enthusiasts look for places to practice this discipline with reasonable expectations of having a quality experience and our search often leads us to remote and isolated destinations. Experience indicates that the more isolated a place is and the more difficult it is to reach (or access), the better the overall experience we are looking for, even more so: If we don’t find other fishermen, it’s almost a dream come true.
In Chile, the places that maintain good fishing and environmental quality are scarce and valuable. However, we see with concern that many of these waters and their environment are affected by adverse interventions and lose their attractiveness forever.
Water courses in Futangue Park
There are few exceptions and one of them is notable: The excellent quality of fishing in the protected watercourses found inside the Futangue Park, which represents a clear example of a great Chilean project, with vision, capacity, experience, determination, and a good dose of criteria that involves the preservation of thousands of hectares that house a unique living sample of Chile’s rainforest.
In the park, the management of the wild salmonid fishery is an important complement to the care of precious virgin lagoons and their tributaries, nestled in the heart of the native forests of the Valdivian foothills, all of which make up an almost unreal scenario. The cultural value of this place has no parallel in the southern cone.
In 1960 for the first time I had the opportunity to fish in a beautiful lagoon from where the upper course of the Pichi-Riñinahue River starts; where few people had arrived. A pristine spot saturated with unspoiled nature, where the hidden lagoon surrounded by forests, mountains and waterfalls of cold and transparent crystal waters, is home to a population of rainbow trout of incomparable beauty, protagonists of fishing stories that are lost in memories of the last century.
Today, the disciples of fly fishing, can find here the dream scenario, and accept the challenge of classic fishing: with dry flies, or try with nymphs, imitating a great variety of invertebrates, you can also experiment with streamers and have surprising results.
